In the first two parts of this series, we talked about the first two steps in the S.M.A.L.L. system – how to SELECT a market and how to MEASURE interest.
S – SELECT a viable market.
M – MEASURE interest.
A – AUTHOR a report.
L – LOOK to repeat.
L – LEVERAGE your assets.
Today we’re going to talk about the “A” in the S.M.A.L.L. system, the actual writing part of the process. Let’s talk about how to AUTHOR your small report or ebook.
Step 3 – AUTHOR A Report.
By this point, you should have your market and topic selected. As I mentioned in the first part of this series, these little ebooks only need to be 7-15 pages long.
Only 7-15 pages long.
That is one of the keys to this whole system. You can easily write it in one sitting.
I don’t want to get into the details about how to write a small report in this post but rather focus on an aspect I find to be very helpful as I write mine.
I put together something called a “swipe file” that I can refer to as I go through the writing process.
A swipe file is basically a collection of ideas that you can refer to in a template consisting of one sentence.
EXAMPLE: One of the most challenging aspects of _____ is _____.
This simple sentence can be used to start a small ebook on virtually thousands of subjects.
- One of the most challenging aspects of internet marketing is…
- One of the most challenging aspects of learning to play golf is…
- One of the most challenging aspects of homeschooling is…
- One of the most challenging aspects of language learning is…
- One of the most challenging aspects of raising kids is…
I will then refer to this starter sentence before I start to write my report, during the actual process of writing it or even as an idea generator for my conclusion.
One of the most challenging aspects of learning how to write a small report is overcoming writer’s block. (see what I did there?) Using this simple starter sentence concept will make it much easier to overcome.
Any time I ever talk to a friend about how I make money on the internet, their eyes inevitably glaze over when I mention that it involves writing.
The vast majority of people think they can’t write.
It’s like asking someone if they can sing. Even if they can, chances are they don’t have the confidence to both admit it and actually do it.
I once read a quote online that said “Do for a year what others won’t then live for a lifetime as others can’t.”
Commit yourself to doing this and when you start to see the results of your efforts, you’ll be inspired to keep going.
Next time we’re going to talk about the letter “L” in the S.M.A.L.L. system – LOOK to repeat.
This is where things start to come together and you’ll see how this is a system that once you’ve learned how to implement, you can do it over and over again.
